Five members of Biggar ramblers met at the Ram statue in Moffat to begin a very wet and misty walk up the forehills to the north of the town. Heading up through the charming community woodland the group took an early coffee under a substantial wooden shelter before taking the path along the edge of Gallow Hill. Out of the woods and across some meadows it was quite apparent that there would be little chance of any views today. The group’s next objective was the top of Hind Hill which was totally shrouded in cloud.On reaching the flat crown of the hill the breeze had picked up along with the intensity of the rain. The group hastily headed down off the hill onto sheltered tracks. A small diversion found the walkers at the site of the sulphurous well, to which the Victorian gentry would flock to take the spa waters. Back in the town the once rather neglected full sized model Spitfire was now totally restored and on view at Dowding House, the RAFA home, where it had been relocated as a memorial to the Battle of Britain ‘Few’. The rain had not relented, so a warm coffee was very welcome at the end of this 5 mile loop. The views remained elusive and would have to wait for another day.
