Following an amazing last morning of their weekend on Bute looking round the wonderful gardens and incredible interior of Mount Stuart, the Biggar Ramblers split into two groups for an afternoon walk. Those wanting an easier walk set off from Kilchattan Bay across the island to Stravanan Bay. The route led inland through some open woodland, decorated with a carpet of bluebells, before crossing open pasture. It then crossed the island airfield and golf course – luckily there were no aircraft or golf balls to contend with! The path now reached Stravanan Bay itself, a fine sandy beach with great views across to Arran. The group spent time here, relaxing in the sun and watching ringed plovers at work at the water’s edge.
The group now retraced their steps as far as the edge of the woodland where they turned into a lane for a few hundred yards, before turning off onto another track which led them past three large upright stones, the remains of a prehistoric circle. Continuing along this track, the road back to Kilchattan, and the end of the walk was reached. Although one of the shortest walks, all agreed that it had been a very relaxing and enjoyable way to end the weekend.
